Hey there to the 20-40 of you that view this blog each day. I just wanted to give you a quick update about what’s been going on for me at the DTH.
I don’t know if you all had the opportunity to read James Edward Dillard’s column this past Tuesday, but if you haven’t I encourage you to read it and also to read what he has to say about it on his blog.
Readers have had a lot to say about this column. The majority of it has been quite critical. It’s not my place to determine whether or not James is right in his views on prostitution or if he is too condescending or if he wasted column space by merely reaffirming the largest open secret in Chapel Hill. But what I am interested in is whether or not journalistic ethics were upheld in the visit to University Massage and the subsequent column about it.
I will be looking into this by talking to people much smarter than myself. I’ve already contacted Professor Lois Boynton in our very own journalism school. I will talk to her, DTH general manager Kevin Schwartz and DTH editors as well as I look into this issue.
Issue # 2 on the table is how the DTH chooses which national stories it will cover. I feel like this can be a very interesting and maybe even testy subject.
This question arose from a reader’s letter last week about the lack of coverage of the Jena 6 in Jena, La. We’ll see where this one leads me.
Anyway, I’ve got a column being published this Wednesday. It will be looking into one of these two issues, and the other one will be addressed in a full blog post online.
As always you can send letters to the editor to editdesk@unc.edu or shoot me an email at jonesaw@email.unc.edu
